“How many grafts do I need?” is one of the first questions people ask when they consider a hair transplant. The answer depends on three things: how large the area to cover is, how rich your donor area is and how much density you want. This guide explains what the numbers mean, which indicative ranges are used for the different stages of hair loss, and why the exact figure can only be set after an assessment.
A graft is not the same as a hair
A graft is a follicular unit: a small group of hairs that grow together from the same point. One graft usually contains 1 to 4 hairs. That is why 2,000 grafts do not mean 2,000 hairs, but a clearly higher number of hairs.
Single-hair grafts are usually placed along the hairline, where a natural look matters most. Grafts with several hairs go further back, where they add volume.
Stages of hair loss: the Norwood scale
In men, hereditary hair loss is often described with the Norwood scale, from 1 (no visible recession) to 7 (extensive baldness across the top of the head). The higher the stage, the larger the area to cover and the more grafts are needed.
The table below shows purely indicative ranges, as they are commonly quoted for orientation. They do not replace a personal assessment.
| Norwood stage | Area affected | Indicative grafts |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | slight recession at the temples | about 1,000–1,500 |
| 3 | marked recession | about 1,500–2,500 |
| 3 vertex | recession and crown | about 2,000–3,000 |
| 4 | larger front and crown areas | about 2,500–3,500 |
| 5 | areas starting to merge | about 3,000–4,500 |
| 6–7 | extensive baldness | 4,000+, depending on the donor area |
Your donor area decides what is possible
Grafts are taken from the back and sides of the head, where hair is genetically more resistant to loss. But the donor area is not unlimited: its density, hair thickness and size determine how many grafts can be taken without visibly thinning it.
That is why two people at the same Norwood stage can be given different recommendations. With thick or curly hair, the same number of grafts also often gives the impression of more coverage.
Density: coverage or maximum volume?
Not everyone wants the same density. Some people mainly want to rebuild the hairline, others also want the crown covered. Because the donor area is limited, priorities sometimes have to be set: usually the front comes first, as it shapes the face the most.
Why to be wary of a number promised without an assessment
A graft number given before anyone has seen your donor area is only a sales estimate. Before you book, always ask:
- how many grafts are planned for your case, and which photos the estimate is based on;
- whether the price changes with the number of grafts;
- which area is treated first if the donor area is not enough for everything.
